Firefighter helps fight COVID-19
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Defence Force established Operation COVID-19 Assist to support the Emergency Management Australia-led response.
Royal Australian Navy reservist maritime logistics officer, Lieutenant Brendan Dumbrell, is deployed to the operation’s Task Unit 1 Headquarters (TU1 HQ) in Brisbane.
“It is an outstanding team focused on providing planning, administrative and logistics support to our Defence personnel on the ground,” Lieutenant Dumbrell said.
As a firefighter with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Lieutenant Dumbrell has had a busy 2020.
“The bushfires coupled with COVID-19 have been devastating for many Australians,” Lieutenant Dumbrell said.
“Like many of my colleagues, I’m fortunate to be in the position to serve my community through both events and the ADF has made a positive contribution.”
Commanding officer of TU1 HQ Lieutenant Colonel Bryce Hertslet said reservists played a critical role supporting the ADF’s contribution to national emergencies.
“We are grateful to all employers of reservists who have ensured the operation can use their specialist skills,” Lieutenant Colonel Hertslet said.
“Lieutenant Dumbrell has been a valuable addition to the task force.
“He is working extremely well within a predominately Army headquarters and that is so good to see.”
TU1 HQ personnel are supporting police border check points across Southern Queensland, assisting biosecurity for the Cherbourg Indigenous community and assisting quarantine, control and management tasks at Brisbane airport and hotels.
