Bringing plenty of experience down south

Raised in Murwillumbah, northern NSW, Leading Aircraftwoman Georgia Smith has arrived in Melbourne for Operation COVID-19 Assist.

As a medic working at Joint Health Command in Queensland, she will test for COVID-19 at a number of drive-through locations around the city.

“We register the person by documenting them in the system. From there they will have a swab test conducted via their nose and in their throat,” Leading Aircraftwoman Smith said.

“They then need to self-solate at home until the results come through.”

Leading Aircraftwoman Smith brings a lot of experience to the operation.

“Before joining Air Force, I was in the Navy and deployed to South-East Asia,” she said.

“More recently, I was in Tasmania as part of the crew that helped run Burnie’s North West Regional Hospital’s emergency department and helped for two weeks after a COVID-19 outbreak.”

ADF medical personnel conducting COVID-19 testing in Melbourne have been briefed by the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure Victorian standards are met.

Personnel on Operation COVID-19 Assist are contributing to the whole-of-government response to the pandemic with a range of personnel and logistics support.
