Using technology to support mental health

Research shows that more veterans are heading online for information and tools to support their mental health.

Devices and technology play an increasingly important role as our smartphones are almost always on-hand. This enables convenient access to support and information, at a time that best suits each individual. 

However, one of the challenges can be figuring out which resources have a strong evidence base and are created by reputable organisations and research teams. In this article we share our list of recommended apps and website resources designed specifically for veterans and the ex-service community. All of the apps can be downloaded free from the App Store and Google Play.

  • HighRes – can help to build resilience and mental fitness. 
  • PTSD Coach – designed to assist trauma-impacted individuals to manage their emotions.
  • The Right Mix – designed to help manage alcohol consumption.
  • OP Life – designed for use with a mental health clinician to help people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts. 
  • At Ease – contains information on living well and mental health conditions
  • Head to Health – lists a range of mental health resources including help lines, websites and links to apps. 

Are you a practitioner or ESO working with veterans?

Phoenix Australia has resources available on their website for those working with veterans. One of these resources is the DVA General Advice Line. This free national service can provide advice to those working with veterans on general veteran mental health resources. The DVA General Advice Line is available 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 1800 838 777. 

Please note this is not a direct service for veterans or their families. Veterans can contact DVA by calling 1800 555 254 or Open Arms on 1800 011 046 for free counselling and support.
